Cold Feelings

Cold Feelings from Sacramento is one of Northern California's hottest bands right now. Cold Feelings is basically the new Whiskey Rebels. As you all know, Whiskey Rebels is one of my favorite bands ever so it would make sense that I would love Cold Feelings. This release is definitely not as hard as Whiskey Rebels and goes for a bit of a more melodic, I suppose "mature" approach. This is an excellent release, and has been one of my most listened to releases of the year.

I am pissed at the label (Oi The Boat) about this release, though. They had announced that there would be limited color vinyl out of /50 pressed for the pre orders and it was going to go up at a specific time. Ok, cool, I would be all ready to go and wait by my computer to order it. When that time comes, I get on and get ready to look at my screen and find myself in horror and disgust. The label pulled a fast one, and put the "secret pre order" up the night before and sold out of all their color vinyl. They announced it on their facebook and sold the color copies out immediately. So, I sent an email to them explaining my (cold) feelings, and how I felt I should still be able to get a color copy since I was deceived and I have been a long time customer. I didn't even get a response from them. I am basically done with Oi the Boat at this point (unless if they put some shit out that I really want that is). Why would you intentionally deceive your customers or have this pre order count down date if you only have 50 copies of a limited color. Plus, isn't the release called "American Industry" with a working class theme? Have you thought that us fuckers that have JOBS have to specially plan for shit like that?

Stupid Hot Oi!

I am always very skeptical of any new Oi! music. Most of the time it is just corny and not done right, but sometimes I get a real surprise that reminds me why I love it so much. I had heard a few things about this band Victory, hailing from St. Paul Minnesota. I heard Oi! the Boat was going to be releasing a 7" for them a few months back and figured I would jump right on it to get a limited copy. To my surprise, the yellow vinyl out of /100 sold out in minutes! That is UNHEARD of for Oi! music. What the fuck is going on??? All of the black vinyl sold out in about an hour and forty minutes. Unbelievable. This thing sold out faster than the Mob Justice LP on sea foam green!

I feel lucky that I snagged one of the yellow copies for this "Stupid Hot Oi!" band. This thing does not let down, except for the song "Real Heroes" which I am not that into. "American Nightmare" is by far my favorite, and when I first put it on it immediately reminded me of Stormwatch. This is true blue, simple, patriotic American Oi! They definitely remind me of the "glory days" of American Oi! bands like Anti-Heros and Combat Ready. As I was doing research for this post, I saw Victory posted a new release yesterday of /300 on black vinyl that completely sold out in a few hours also. This is mind blowing to me, considering copies of Losin It's "No Apology" LP were available on pre order pink /50 for like 2 plus months.

Whiskey Rebels Last Shows

A few weeks back I attended the Whiskey Rebels' last shows. A very sad weekend for sure, seeing one of my favorite bands of all time call it quits. Whiskey Rebels were a group that I grew up on and meant the world to me. I was able to pick up a few items celebrating their grand finale weekend.

First was a limited edition cover, which was basically just a single piece of card board. Honestly I'm rather disappointed in the design and the fact that it wasn't hand numbered. I don't even know how many were made, and essentially had to pay $10 to get a black copy of an LP I already owned. Whatever though, it's not like I wasn't going to buy it. (See my previous review for this LP here.)

Plead the Fifth also played and made a limited cover in what I believe to be one of the best hardcore 7"s of the year. I like what they did with the "I can hear the reaper calling" cover, giving a shout out to Whiskey Rebels. It's just a plain piece of xeroxed paper, but I think they did a good job considering that they were added to the show last minute. Grave Maker cancelled two days before the show so they put these together pretty fast! It comes on red vinyl, but I'm not sure if all 20 were on red vinyl. (See my previous review of this 7" here.)

My favorite item that I got was this poster drawn by Big Chuck of Whiskey Rebels. Nice big poster on thick card board, hand numbered #14/100. I felt this was 10 dollars well spent, and I'll definitely be framing this to go with the rest of my Big Chuck paintings. I had so much fun watching Whiskey Rebels for the last time, it truly saddens me that they called it quits. I only hope they will have a reunion show or two one day. Check out "Reaper Calling" below:

Make Em Say Oi! Nah Nah Nah Nah...

Recently I heard that Oi! the Boat Records was pressing a Whiskey Rebels collection of unreleased tracks and I was all over it, and I quickly ordered both copies of White on /220 and Black on /330. Whiskey Rebels always has been and always will be one of my favorite bands. Whiskey Rebels are one of the best bands to ever play punk rock in California, period. Them and Pressure Point really put Sacramento and Northern California on the map as far as Punk and Oi! goes. What makes them so special is their versatility. They could play at almost any show with damn near any genre (hardcore, punk, Oi!, whatever) and blow the crowd away because they played such a wide variety of styles. Some of their songs are so hard that hardcore bands that specialize in hardcore can't even touch them, then they can throw you off with a sing along punk/Oi! anthem too. As with most bands, the front man makes all the difference, and Big Chuck is one of the best. As far as excellent vocals that can pretty much sing any style, but also being able to write some of the best lyrics, you just can't fuck with him.

This release has some stuff I didn't even know existed on it (a Reagan Youth, Social Distortion and The Jam cover), some unreleased songs I've never heard that were supposed to be on releases or compilations that never came out, and also some tracks that were on their first album but earlier recordings of them. As far as the layout on this goes, I'm really surprised they didn't just have Chuck draw something for it since his artwork is fucking sick. I have a bunch of Chuck's paintings that I was going to put in this post, but I decided to post it later with some of their other vinyl that I have.

The poster includes some pretty good stories behind some of these recordings. One of my favorite tracks on this release ("Ready to Die") I had never heard live and never knew existed. The story goes that the Whiskey Rebels and American Static were on tour and playing in Philadelphia with The Boils. Apparently they partied and recorded this track all night long after playing a show that night, featuring all three vocalists and the singer from the Boils was all sick from drinking too much but he was still able to wake up and do his vocal part.

So the Whiskey Rebels haven't played in a few years and are having a couple last shows later this month. Without a doubt this is going to be the highlight of my entire summer. At the same time it will be very bitter sweet seeing one of my favorite bands ever call it quits. Whiskey Rebels were a huge influence on my life and I have nothing but great memories of them since my old band used to play with them so much. All around really great guys and a great band. I wish they could play forever but I'm glad they're atleast doing a proper last show.

Here is some footage from 2007 of them, since they were pretty much playing before the smart phone era there is only a couple videos of them on youtube, but I'm sure after this last show there will be plenty.
